Presentation

The Laboratoire d’Acoustique de l’Université du Mans (LAUM) is a Joint Research Unit of Le Mans University and CNRS (UMR 6613). The research carried out at LAUM concerns acoustics.

Acoustics is the science of sounds. It is related to the production, transmission and reception of sound as well as its effects on living beings, environment and matter. Acoustics is an integral part of the engineering and environmental sciences, health and life sciences as well as humanities and social sciences.

Investigations at LAUM mainly focus on acoustic sources and sensors, wave propagation in fluids (at rest or in flow), wave propagation in solids (porous, granular or composite materials) and vibrating structures. The main objective is to understand the physical phenomena through both analytical developments and experimental studies associated with numerical simulations.

Applications cover a wide field of topics: noise reduction, vibration damping, evaluation and control of materials, sound quality, audio, musical instrument manufacture, energy harvesting, etc.

Staff:

  • 150 people including
  • 60 researchers and teachers-researchers
  • 70 students and postdoctoral fellows
  • 20 administrative and technical staff
