In Memoriam - Philippe Béquin
The May 22, 2025

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Philippe Béquin, researcher at LAUM and teacher in acoustics in the Physical Measurements department and head of department at the IUT du Mans since May 2021, taken suddenly by illness at the age of 61.
Philippe came to the University of Le Mans in 1990 for his thesis and obtained his doctorate in 1994. It should be noted that he had initially opted for a BTS after obtaining his baccalauréat. In 1996, he was appointed Senior Lecturer at the IUT du Mans, in the GMP department, then in 2000 in the Physical Measurements department. Over the course of his career, he also taught in the DEUST and Licence Technologie Mécanique programs at the science faculty.
Philippe was much appreciated by his colleagues and students alike. He was discreet and modest, but very committed to the IUT; he was always ready to welcome secondary school students and show them around the MP department, and to go to fairs dedicated to helping young people find their bearings. He was always keen to encourage students to take up scientific training!
He also enthusiastically took part in the Afterwork organized last February, which brought together around twenty former students and during which he spoke at length with the participants.
He was also active in research, working at the Laboratoire d'Acoustique de l'Université du Mans on ionic transduction, a theme combining acoustics, electrical discharge physics, electromagnetism and fine metrology. And to raise student awareness of his other research theme, non-linear propagation, he installed two structures in the hall of the Physical Measurement department, one made of wooden slats and the other of bamboo, which could be used to modify the propagation of acoustic waves. Depending on the arrangement of the slats, certain sounds in particular can be suppressed or others favored.
His passing leaves a great void in our community.
Our heartfelt thoughts go out to his family and friends, and to all those who had the good fortune to work with him.
The university presidency, the management of the IUT du Mans and of the LAUM, on behalf of all their members, his colleagues and friends, would like to express the esteem in which he was held by the university community.
